Workshop: NJacko - African Drumming 10:30am to 12pm
Juno-nominated Njacko Backo and Kalimbas At Work weave together the sweet sounds of kalimba (African piano) and ngoni (African harp) in unique configurations anchored in traditional Cameroonian rhythms. Njacko has a lifetime of practice in capturing the subtlety of storytelling and dance with his music – an essential part of the African performing arts.
On their latest release, Mieux Vaut Tard Que Jamais (Better Late Than Never), Njacko embraced his Cameroonian roots on a new level, collaborating with several other African musicians who understand the nuance of Central African music. Maga Benam is featured prominently on the album, a style of music that Njacko created by fusing the traditions of Mangambeu and Ben Skin. Njacko’s lyrics carry a powerful, yet often humorous message about the importance of respect, love, integrity, community and self-worth, and his playful animation creates joyful memories for audiences of all ages.
