Workshop: Felting
Come and learn the basics of felting. |
Boiled wool mittens have incredible insulating qualities, even when wet. They were once used by fishermen in the Northern Hemisphere who spent much of the winter by the sea. Felted mittens and hats are first knitted with 100% genuine wool, then washed in hot water; the stitches tighten and the wool becomes felted. The items are then placed on blockers to air dry—a process called blocking—to give them their final shape.
The inspiration for creating felted mittens and hats developed after a visit to the Maritime Museum in Bergen, Norway, in 2018. I bought a pair of locally made felted mittens there; they were so warm that I wanted to make some just like them… Then I started making hats. Knitting is a skill I inherited from my maternal grandmother... I love creating designs that are out of the ordinary while reminding us of our traditional heritage. |
